Johnny Deep has revealed that Disney Executives disliked his Pirates of the Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow and thought the character was gay.
Johnny Deep has revealed that Disney Executives disliked his Pirates of the Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow and thought the character was gay. Deep played the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the three Pirates of the Caribbean films and is reprising the role for the fourth instalment in the franchise; On Stranger Tides. While Deep will be returning for the fourth film co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will not.
It seems that while Captain Jack was popular with audiences to begin with Disney executives were not keen on the character – disliking him and one even thought the character was gay.
“They couldn’t stand him. They just couldn’t stand him. I think it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie. What’s wrong with him? Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay? And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite… ‘But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?’ Which really made her nervous.” – Johnny Deep in Vanity Fair
The actor discussed the Pirates of the Caribbean movies while promoting his new film, The Tourist, which he co-stars alongside Angelina Jolie. The actor revealed the pair had to be careful about being photographed too close together incase rumours surrounding them began. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is due to be released on 20th May 2011.
