ATV TodayDeadline Hollywood are reporting that Cate Blanchett has signed up for The Hobbit. Blanchett will reprise her Lord of the Rings role of Elf Queen Galadriel for the prequel. The Hobbit, which will consist of two films, will start filming next year in New Zealand. However, the novel The Hobbit by Tolken did not contain the character of Galadriel although she did appear in Unfinished Tales and The Simarillion. So will Peter Jackson’s two Hobbit films also feature material from other Tolken books as well? Or are they padding out there two films with new material?

Already announced cast members include Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Armitage and James Nesbitt. Former Doctor Who actor Sylvester McCoy will reportedly play Radagast the Brown, Ken Scott the dwarf lord Balin and Mikael Persbrandt as Beorn. It’s also expected that Sir Ian McKellan will reprise his role of Gandalf though there has been no official announcement on this. Also expected to appear in the film are Andy Serkis will once again play Gollum and that Christopher Lee will also appear as Saruman.
