A special one-hour live episode of Coronation Street to mark the soap’s 50th anniversary was seen by 13.4m viewers.

The live episode dealt with the aftermath of the devastating tram crash as the residents of the street learnt of the death of Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold), while Molly Dobbs (Vicky Binns) confessed to Sally (Sally Dynevor) that Kevin (Michael Le Vell) was the father of Baby Jack – before dying under the rubble of the Corner Shop.

The episode also left the life of Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) in the balance with fans having to watch tonight’s double bill to see if Peter becomes the third victim of the crash.

Although a good figure, it is less than the 15.6m who watched EastEnders’ live episode in February which marked its 25th anniversary and revealed Stacey Branning (Lacey Turner) as the murderer of Archie Mitchell (Larry Lamb).
