Matt Cardle has won The X Factor 2010, beating Rebecca Ferguson and One Direction.

The former painter and decorator from Essex has won this year’s X Factor competition. He beat Rebecca Ferguson who came second, and One Direction who finished third. This is the first time since 2007 that his mentor, Dannii Minogue has won the competition. Dannii joined the show in 2007, in which Leon Jackson won the competition.

Earlier tonight, Simon Cowell’s One Direction came in third. Cowell looked visibly shocked at the announcement but insisted this is not the last that we will hear of them. In the final showdown, Rebecca came second, putting an end to Cheryl Cole winning for the third time. Matt Cardle has been favourite to win the competition from outset of the live shows. On Saturday, he sang with international popstar Rihanna, pictured below.

The night began with the three acts performing a song before the phone lines were frozen. A group has never won The X Factor so there was optimism that One Direction could become the first group to do this. “All I can say is, this is just the beginning for these boys” said Simon Cowell after it was announced they had finished third.

The final two then sang what would become their winners song. For the first time, they would have an individual song rather than one for all. Rebecca Ferguson sang ‘Distant Dreamer’, a song sung by Duffy. Matt Cardle sang Biffy Clyro’s ‘Many Of Horror’ which is now expected to be this year’s Christmas number one. The song is released at midnight.
