Coronation Street to feature gay wedding
Coronation Street will reportedly feature a gay wedding as the character of Sean Tully marries ex boyfriend Marcus Dent – that’s according to a tabloid report.
Coronation Street will feature its first gay wedding later this year according to The Sun. The tabloid reports that Sean Tully (Anthony Cotton) will marry ex boyfriend Marcus Dent (Charlie Condou) later this year. Viewers last year Marcus on the cobbles of Weatherfield in 2008 when he ended his relationship with Sean because of the gay barman’s insecurities and jealousy. However, The Sun reports that the character is set to make a come back this year and will reunite with Sean.
“Bringing back Charlie is seen as a big platform for him and in particular Antony who is well liked and admired by the boss. When Marcus turns up in Weatherfield in the spring he is desperate to rekindle his romance. But having hurt him once, Sean is apprehensive until Marcus offers him commitment, with the future storyline leading to Corrie’s first same sex marriage.” – A “source” quoted in The Sun
The tabloid claims that Sean Tully is one of the characters new producer Phil Collinson is keen to put at the centre of the action in 2011. The producer has already stated he feels Coronation Street can promote positive roles models for its audiences to relate to – signalling out the highly popular lesbian romance between Sian (Sacha Parkinson) and Sophie (Brooke Vincent).
Coronation Street won’t be the first soap to feature a gay wedding/civil ceremony as Emmerdale and Doctors have both featured such plots in recent years.
