Samantha Womack has quit EastEnders reportedly over the baby-swap plot which involves her character of Ronnie Branning. The Sun reports that Womack decided to quit the BBC soap upon learning of the storyline late last year. The tabloid further claims that BBC bosses tried to tempt the actress to remain with EastEnders by offering her a salary raise and lighter storylines in the future – but the actress remained determined to leave.
The baby-swap plotline started on New Year’s Eve when Ronnie discovered her baby son James had died and swapped it for Kat Moon’s (Jessie Wallace) newly born son. The storyline is designed to continue for some months. However, there has already been over 3000 complaints regarding the storyline and lots of negative publicity in the press. However, Monday and Tuesday’s episodes of EastEnders both topped 10 million viewers – some of the soaps highest ratings in recent months.
According to other sources Samantha Womack will leave EastEnders at the end of her current contract in the Summer.
