Should EastEnders have cut baby-swap plot?
The growing controversy surrounding the baby-swap plot in EastEnders has led the BBC soap to announce the storyline has been cut short. Over seven thousand viewers have complained about the storyline which continues to receive negativity publicity within the press. But was EastEnders right to cut the storyline?
The baby-swap plot in EastEnders is now the soap’s most controversial story in terms of the amount of complaints it has generated. According to the latest figures over 8000 viewers have complained to the BBC while several hundred have complained to Ofcom. Yesterday the complains surpassed the figure for those who complained over the death of Danielle in EastEnders last year. It has also been revealed that Samantha Womack, who plays Ronnie Branning, will be leaving the soap later in the year.
Despite the number of complaints though ratings for EastEnders have not fallen – they remain strong. In fact this week has seen the soap attract some of its best ratings for nearly a year. Each episode has attracted over 10 million viewers with ratings increasing over the week. So if the storyline is so unpopular with its audience why are ratings rising not falling? Well of course all the publicity surrounding the storyline is partially responsible as viewers tune in to see ‘what all the fuss’ is about.
Yesterday as it was announced the storyline was to be cut short there was, for the first time, some voices saying the storyline should continue. There were some arguing the BBC should not have backed down to what has effectively become a lobby group and should have allowed the storyline to continue.
So we are now asking you, our readers, for your opinion on this question: Should the BBC have cut the baby-swap plot or allowed it to continue?
