BBC Axe Legard for F1 2011

BBC Sport has unveiled Martin Brundle as new Number 1 commentator for F1 in 2011.

Brundle replaces Jonathan Legard, who after two seasons, was not a favourite among many fans. Brundle, who has been co-commentator for ITV and BBC since 1997 will have ex-F1 driver and current BBC F1 analyist David Coulthard beside him in the commentary box.

Legard, who worked on F1, football and other sports for Radio Five Live didn’t spark the chemisty with Brundle and many fans called for his departure on forums. Many Fans predicted and hoped for the likes of ITV BTCC commentator Ben Edwards to take over, but this surprise move will mean there is plenty of anticipation as the new season looms in March.

Ben Gallop, Head of BBC F1 said: “We’re always looking for ways to take our F1 coverage to another level – and for 2011 we have an exciting new combination in the commentary box. He was also sad to say Jonathan Legard go, “He is a first-rate journalist and broadcaster who has been a core member of our team, helping to re-establish BBC Sport as the nation’s F1 broadcaster. We wish him all the very best for the future.”

It is not clear if Jonathan Legard will remain with the BBC, he said on Twitter: “Investigating various options, home and abroad, in F1 and outside. Interesting times…”
