Veteran actor Robert Wagner has confirmed he is in talks for the planned ABC remake of Charlie’s Angels. Earlier this week ABC officially ordered a pilot for a remake of the 1970s detective drama that starred Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd, Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. Reports then emerged that Wagner was in talks to play the reclusive millionaire Charlie Townsend who hires the “angels” to work for him as private detectives.
In the original series, and the two Hollywood films of the early 2000s, the voice of Charlie was provided by John Forsythe. The original Charlie’s Angels was produced by Aaron Spelling who, in 1981, went on to produce soap Dynasty where he cast Forsythe as the ruthless oil tycoon Blake Carrington. In the series Charlie was only ever heard and never seen up close – though the audience were often teased with glimpses of him.
Robert Wagner confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that he has been in talks over the role of Charlie but will the recluse be confined to speak to the angels over the telephone or will he get all modern?
“I would imagine it will probably be quite different because the technology is quite different. I would imagine it would be on cell phones wherever these gals are. I could be tweeting them, I could be doing a lot of things with them, you know.” – Robert Wagner quoted on Entertainment Weekly
The new series of Charlie’s Angels will be set in Miami and will be produced by Leonard Golberg, Nancy Juvonen and Drew Barrymore who starred in the two Hollywood films of the 2000s.
So if Wagner is to play Charlie who could play the three ‘angels? Post your suggestions below!
