Piers Morgan prepares for CNN debut

Piers Morgan’s new prime-time show for CNN launches tomorrow, but will his star power be enough to pull in the ratings?

Piers takes over the 9.00pm slot on CNN tomorrow, which was vacated by veteran host Larry King who quit late last year after 25 years on air. ‘Piers Morgan Tonight’ will air weekdays and kicking off this week is a series of taped interviews with some big names.

In his first show he sits down with Oprah Winfrey in a ‘Life Stories’ type discussion about her high and low points in a career which has made her one of the most powerful people in television worldwide. Other guests this week include Howard Stern and Ricky Gervais.

CNN in prime-time does not rate well, with their shows often finishing in third place. Piers has a battle on his hands to increase the ratings, but does he have the power to beat rival Fox News, who regularly attract on average around 2million viewers, compared to CNN’s 500,000. Piers is said to be confident at increasing the ratings. “We need the ratings to go up, It’s as simple as that. It’s at around 600,000 at the moment. I’ve got to produce compelling interviews and the ratings will come.”

Viewers in the UK can watch ‘Piers Morgan Tonight’ at 8.00pm weeknights.
