Another Moon Rising For EastEnders

“Oh What A Circus Oh What A Show” Sang David Essex in his 1970s hit from the Musical Evita. Rather apt lyrics to the news that the singer is to join the media circus that is EastEnders of late.

 

“Fresh from the joys of new year and the dead-baby-swap, the producers are now inflicting even more Moons on viewers. This sadistic streak must end soon!” ATV critic Justin Mason says.

Essex who’s other acting credits include playing a Gypsie in ITV’s 1960s set police drama Heartbeat will arrive as “Alfie’s charismatic uncle Eddie Moon.”

Regular viewers to Walford will have already seen Eddie’s son Michael who is played by Steve John Shepherd. The new Moon is a happy-go-lucky sort (if that is in anyway possible in current plot-driven ‘Enders) but it hasn’t always been that way. Yes some dark secrets are in the past, but they certainly won’t be staying there long as in true Albert Square style they’ll be exposed to the residents quicker than Kat Moon can down a bottle of vodka.

Speaking of his new role as Eddie, Essex commented: “Being an East-Ender myself, I’m really excited to be joining the Square. Eddie Moon is a great character and I can’t wait to get to grips with the role and work with such a fantastic cast. I’m really pleased that I’ve been able to make filming work around my tour dates this time.”

David Essex isn’t a new recruit to EastEnders. He originally was offered the part of Honey Mitchell’s father Jack Edward in 2005. However due to music commitments Essex pulled out. Essex has an extensive career in music having achieved 23 top 30 singles in the UK alone. Hits include the Mike Batt penned A Winter’s Tale which Rita Sullivan – wonderful Barbara Knox – sung in Coronation Street’s 2010 Christmas edition.
