Doctor Who wins at the SFX Awards

The winners of the awards were revealed at the SFX Weekender which was held over the past several days in London,.

 

Doctor Who was by far the biggest winner picking up four awards. Matt Smith beat Leonard DiCaperio, Robert Downey Jr and David Tennant to win the Best Actor Matt Smithaward. It is perhaps the first time that an actor has beaten another one for a Best Actor award for the same part – essentially. David Tennant was nominated for his role of the 10th Doctor in which he bowed out on New Year’s Day 2010 in The End of Time Part Two and succeed by Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor.

Matt Smith’s Doctor Who side-kick Karen Gillan won Best Actress for her portrayal of Amy Pond in the BBC sci fi series. Gillan beat Chloe Mortez (Kick Ass), Tvonne Strahovski (Chuck) and Zoe Karen GillanSaldana (Avatar) for the award.

Doctor Who also won Best Television Show beating E4’s Misfits, The CW drama Supernatural and HBO’s vampire series True Blood. Doctor Who also won the Sci-Fi Phenomenon Award. However, Ashes to Ashesin Doctor Who lost out to fellow BBC series Ashes to Ashes in the Best Television Episode category. The series finale of Ashes to Ashes won the award beating Vincent and the Doctor for Doctor Who, Swang Song for Supernatural and Everything is Broken for True Blood.

 

E4’s Misfits didn’t go home empty handed though winning the SFX Breakout of the Year Award. Being Human actor Russell Tovey meanwhile was named the SFX Cult Hero. Edgar Wright was named Best Film Director for the genre-bending film Scott Pilgrim Vs The World beating Christopher Nolan for Inception, James Cameron for Russell ToveyAvatar and Lee Unkrich for Toy Story 3. Inception did win Best Film though beating Toy Story 3, Kiss Ass and Avatar. Terry Pratchett picked up two awards; Best Novel for I Shall Wear Midnight and the SFX Outstanding Contribution Award.

 

Other winners included the Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 8 (by Joss Whedon and George Jeanty) for the Best Comic or Graphic Novel category. Best Videogame was won by Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Best Collectable, Model or Toy was by the Eleven Doctor’s Action Figure set from Character Options.
