Stargate Universe to return as television movies?

The possibility of Stargate Universe returning as a series of television movies has been raised by producer Joseph Mallozzi. Syfy announced last year it had cancelled Universe because of low ratings and it would not be renewing the spin-off for a third season. The cancellation came shortly after Battlestar Galactica’s spin-off Caprica was cancelled; the two shows were paired together on Tuesday evenings.
The decision to axe Universe spilt fans some of whom were glad by the cancellation (some Stargate fans are strongly opposed to Universe) while others were dismayed. It was hoped that producers would try to take the show to another broadcaster in a bid to save Universe. At any rate producers vowed to find a way – if possible – to keep Universe alive and now it seems as though it could continue via television movies.
“Hopefully by the time the season finale, ‘Gauntlet’ airs we’ll have definite word on a potential movie or two. If it’s a go on the television movies and fans can look forward to a proper end to Destiny’s mission, then ‘Gauntlet’ will certainly set the stage for a grand conclusion. If, on the other hand, things don’t pan out and ‘Gauntlet’ does turn out to be the bittersweet [series] finale, fans will be thrilled, touched, heartbroken… and left to wonder what could have been.” – Joseph Mallozzi on his blog.
Stargate Universe returns this week to Syfy for its final ten episodes. When Stargate SG-1 ended it continued via straight-to-dvd movies. However, since the crash of the DVD market further planned movies of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis have been put on hold and it seemed unlikely that Universe would follow suit and continue in that medium. The prospect of television movies though raises fans hope that Universe, and Stargate, will continue in some form.
