American musical comedy Glee has been caught up in a row over using a song by Gary Glitter. The Fox hit is at the centre of a storm over its use of Glitter’s 1970’s song Do You Wanna Touch Me. The song is performed in an episode of Glee, titled Sexy, by returning guest-star Gwyneth Paltrow. The episode aired in America this week and there’s already been criticism of it for its lap-dances and high sex orientated content.
In the UK though the episode is more likely to cause a storm because it contains the song by Glitter. The singer is a convicted paedophile and will benefit from the use of the song in Glee through royalty payments. In America the song is already being downloaded and has reached the top 30 in the iTunes charts.
In the UK Glee airs on digital station E4 where some episodes have neared the 2 million mark. Since Glitter was convicted of his crimes his music has largely been banished from television and radio. The inclusion of his song in the episode of Glee is quite possibly the only occasions his music has been screened on UK television since his conviction.
