Gardener turned chat-show host Alan Titchmarsh has blasted reality television but admitted ITV his the worst culprit for such shows. Titchmarsh currently presents an afternoon chat-show for ITV and recently signed a multi-million pound deal to remain with the broadcaster. It is thought the new deal with ITV includes launching a new prime-time gardening show for ITV. However, speaking to The Sun’s TV Biz the famous gardener admitted he doesn’t like reality television – something, alongside soaps, ITV heavily relies on.
“I think a lot of reality TV is puerile. I mean, Strictly Come Dancing is great – you learn how to dance. But to go to the other end, to put people in the jungle – I mean I know it’s popular and people want to watch it, fair enough. But from my point of view it’s rather dreary. There’s a much more exciting life going on out there.” – Alan Titchmarsh in The Sun
Titchmarsh presented Popstar to Operastar for ITV last year which saw the likes of Bernie Nolan, Danny Jones and Kym Marsh take part. The series was not a success for ITV with disappointing ratings but there have been rumours that ITV is considering ordering a second series.
ITV is heavily reliant on reality television/talent contests with shows such as The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, The Only Way is Essex and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here shoring up its schedules across the year. The shows boost ITV’s ratings considerably and also advertising revenue.
The Alan Titchmarsh Show airs weekdays on ITV1 at 3pm.
