Joe McElderry signs up for Popstar to Operastar
Former X Factor winner Joe McElderry has reportedly signed up for the second series of ITV’s Popstar to Operastar.
The geordie singer won The X Factor in 2009 beating fellow finalists Stacey Solomon and Olly Murs. However, despite initial success with his debut single The Climb the singer struggled with subsequent releases to get a number one. His second single Ambitions from his debut album Wide Awake debuted at Number 6 while his single Someone Wake Me Up, part of the soundtrack for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, only made it to 68 in the UK charts.
However, the Sunday Mirror is claiming McElderry is amongst those signed up for the second series of Popstar to Operastar.
“Joe loves to sing – he’s not bothered about what people will say. He will prosper from doing a show like this. He’s incredibly talented and thinks appearing on the show could open up a whole new chapter. He’s always loved the West End and thrill of performing live – it’s when he’s at his best. Considering the deal with Syco has just fizzled out, Joe’s in a great place right now. He’s investing his money wisely and making sure he has something to show for all of his hard work.” – A “source” quoted in the Sunday Mirror
The first series of Popstar to Operastar aired on ITV1 in 2010 and featured Bernie Nolan, Kym Marsh, Jimmy Osmond, Danny Jones and with Darius Campbell winning. It was presented by Myleen Klass and Alan Titchmarsh with Katherine Jenkins and Laurence Llewelyn Bowen amongst the judges. It was not a ratings hit for ITV and was reportedly cancelled by the broadcaster but was later saved and a second series ordered.
