Sarah Michelle Gellar has said she’s “very upset” at the cancellation of daytime soap All My Children. The ABC soap was cancelled alongside One Life to Live a few weeks ago by ABC and will be replaced by new lifestyle programmes. All My Children is due to end in September while One Life to Live will end next year. Fans of the two soaps have united to try and save the serials and are hoping another broadcaster will step in and save them both. While Sarah Michelle Gellar is probably still best known for her title role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer the actress had a two year stint in All My Children in the 1990s.
“I’m very upset about that. First of all, they had the audacity to cancel it on my birthday. So let’s have that discussion. I think it’s criminal. I remember pretending to be sick when I was younger and staying home and like watching the ABC soap lineup in bed. And I realize it’s t ough economic times and it wasn’t necessarily financially working, but there has to be a way to make it work. And these shows have been on for 40 years. I’m sorry, [but] I don’t see either one of these shows they’re replacing with it lasting more than a year. I really don’t, and I say that with confidence. And I think, I don’t think they tried hard enough to save the genre. And, it’s just devastating to me.” – Sarah Michelle Gellar quoted on MSN’s Wonder Wall
Gellar played the role of Kendall Hart on All My Children between 1993 and 1995. Kendall was the daughter of Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) and was billed as the most “terrible daughter” ever during the characters first stint in Pine Valley. Gellar’s stint as Kendall earned her a Daytime Emmy award in 1995 but later the same year quit the soap for other roles. Kendall was re-introduced to Pine Valley in 2002 but played by actress Alicia Minshew.
Reports recently emerged that ABC was also considering axing General Hospital, its only other remaining daytime soap. At the time of AMC & OLTL’s cancellation the medical soap was said to be “safe for now” which hardly gave fans confidence over its future. A weeks later it emerged ABC was considering axing General Hospital to make way for a new talk-show but as yet there’s been no further developments in that story.
