Sherlock Wins at the Baftas

Sherlock, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’, modern-day re-imaging of Sherlock Holmes tales has picked up two awards at this year’s Batfa seeing off ITV’s critically acclaimed Downton Abbey to win Best Drama Series.

The critically acclaimed Sherlock was a smash hit for BBC One last Summer when the three-part series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman aired. A second series is currently in production with Freeman taking time off from filming The Hobbit in New Zealand to record Sherlock. The series has performed well at this year’s BAFTA awards picking up the Best Drama Series gong beating Downton Abbey, Being Human and Misfits. All three series’ have been critical hits for their respective broadcasters with Downton Abbey being a runaway hit for ITV in the Autumn with audiences topping 10 million viewers.

Sherlock also picked up the Best Supporting Actor gong for Martin Freeman in his role as Watson. Once again Sherlock beat Downton Abbey to the award with Brendan Coyle nominated his role in the Edwardian drama while Johnny Harris was nominated for This Is England ’86 and Robert Sheehan for Misfits.
