John Barrowman claims half of the actors in Hollywood are gay
John Barrowman has claimed that ‘half of the straight actors in Hollywood‘ are actually gay.
{jcomments on}The openly gay Torchwood actor was discussing the need for more actors to come out. Barrowman previously stated that if more actors came out as gay the prejudice they may face to their career would disappear. Continuing that theme the actor, in an interview with the New York Magazine, urged more actors to come out and be open over their sexuality.
“You are the one who has to make that decision. But don’t negate other people who don’t live a lie, and don’t try to make it like they can’t play a character because of who they are at home or in bed with their partner, because it makes no difference and has no relevance….Because I will say this – half of the straight actors who are playing straight characters in Hollywood are actually gay. I’m not pointing any fingers, but it would just make things a lot easier if everybody was who they are. As GaGa would say, you were born this way.” – John Barrowman speaking to New York Magazine
In the past other openly gay actors – such as Rupert Everett – have advised actors not to come out. However, there now numerous examples of openly gay actors in high profile roles on television on both sides of the Atlantic.
Torchwood: Miracle Day launches on Thursday at 9pm on BBC One with John Barrowman reprising his role of Captain Jack Harkness alongside Eve Myles, Bill Pullman and Lauren Ambrose.
