Weekend sales slump for The Sun and Sunday Times

Weekend sales for The Sun and The Sunday Times fell while other titles recorded an increase and it’s been revealed the final edition of the News of the World sold 3.8 million copies.

The boycott of the News of the World may not have happened but the phone hacking scandal does seem to have impacted on other News International papers if weekend figures are any indication. The Guardian is reporting that both The Sun and The Sunday Times saw sales drop over the weekend. The paper reports that Saturday’s edition of The Sun may have sold up around 250,000 fewer copies – representing the paper’s worst weekend of the year. The Sunday Times meanwhile sold 30,000 fewer copies according to unofficial figures.

Figures now released for the News of the World reveal that 3.8 million copies were sold. That’s slightly less that estimates yesterday which claimed over 4 million copies were sold but its a significant rise on previous editions of the Sunday tabloid. Readers from across the country likely bought the final edition, along with other Sunday papers, because it was the final edition. Other papers across the weekend saw their circulation figures rise on the back of the phone in scandal with the Sunday Mirror and the Mail on Sunday benefiting most.
