Brookside Close by Lee BradyAfter a very sad look for the best part of the past 6 years, the home of one of the most dramatic, gritty and popular soaps in history has a new look.

Brookside Close now looks fresh just like it did back in 1982 when the soap began, no trees on the one-time set and is currently looking quite bare, the only difference is the modern cars that are now parked in the cul-de-sac as its now a residential close.

The former hit television serial aired on Channel 4 for 21 years but was axed from the network in 2003 after the broadcaster said ratings had declined too far for the Liverpool based saga to be saved.

However nearly a decade on from the final episode Brookside Close looks a great place again. A lot of fans continue to hope that the series can be re-booted with new episodes, but sadly it seems that the show that moved millions with its dramatic storylines is unlikely to ever return to mainstream television.

Lee Brady of the Brookside DVD Campaign told ATV Today, “Finally the new sign is up and the close looks brilliant. Its been done up lovely, from a very slow 6 years which has seen it look so bad we thought if it didn’t get the right owner it could be demolished, and to see it like it is now makes history almost repeat itself.”

There has of course been a long running campaign to get classic episodes of Brookside released on DVD for fans to revisit their favourite characters such as Jimmy Corkhill, Sheila Grant and Harry Cross to name only a few.

Brookside Close, Lee BradyLee says, “We have yet to get an update as far as the Channel 4 DVD is concerned for Brookside’s 30th Anniversary in November 2012.” He continues “We have been supporting Channel 4 for the past few months with suggestions from all of the fans passing on suggestions of what they’d like to see on the special anniversary DVD next year. Channel 4 were happy with the said requests made by fans and are now working on the project but will still have to deal with clearance issues which takes a bit of time, So we may not hear anything official until around January 2012. But it will be all worth it in the end.”

Over those 21 years that Merseyside was home to Channel 4’s flagship serial the programme brought many television firsts to the screen, some which are still referenced in popular culture today, such as the lesbian screen kiss.

“With the new look of Brookside Close don’t you just wish we could take all of the residents away and place some of the former cast into the close to give us another special episode?” Lee asks of the Brookie fans.

The Brookside community is alive and well and can be found at www.BrooksideFans.com – there are plenty of photographs and video clips of the close over the years since the series ended at the fansite. Lee would also love to hear from fans of the show, “How would you write a comeback storyline for Brookside?” he asks, well if you have any suggestions, pop Lee an email by clicking HERE.
