Piers Morgan defends Rupert Murdoch
Journalist turned chat-show host Piers Morgan has defended Rupert Murdoch and News International on his CNN show.
Morgan worked on the News International titles The Sun (1989 – 1994) and News of the World. Morgan was the editor of News of the World – between 1994 and 1995. Morgan then became editor of The Sun’s rival the Daily Mirror from 1995 to 2004. So far Morgan has kept relatively quiet about the phone-hacking scandal that has engulfed News International and resulted in News of the World being shut down.
However, on Monday’s edition of Piers Morgan Tonight – his CNN chat show – the former editor defended Murdoch. Morgan said “I don’t accept that he himself would be party to illegal activity.” and added “For the record, I do not believe that any story that we published in either title was ever gained in an unlawful manner.” (see video below)
In recent days the phone-hacking scandal has received more attention in America as it threatens to spread to News Corp there with accusations that attempts were made to hack the phones of 9/11 victims.
