Ben Price denies Corrie has a gay agenda

Ben Price{jcomments on}Coronation Street actor Ben Price, who plays Nick Tilsley, has denied the ITV soap has a “gay agenda” or too many gay characters.

The actor was responding to an article written by critic Brian Sewell for the Daily Mail in which he claimed the soap had too many LGBT characters – he also slammed BBC soap EastEnders in the same article for similar reasons. The article was quickly picked up by other tabloid newspapers who were quick to jump on the “too many gays” band-wagon. Ben Price has denied that the soap has too many gay characters.

“It’s 2011. I don’t understand where that’s coming from It’s about stories, relationships and problems. The sexuality question is pretty redundant. They’re love stories, regardless of which gender the characters involved are.” – Ben Price in the Metro

Corrie actor Charlie Condou, who plays Marcus Dent, wrote a response to Sewell’s scathing attack for The Guardian newspaper. Meanwhile producer Phil Collinson also denied Corrie had too many gay characters and said such accusations were only being made because he is gay himself. The producer also pointed out that many of the LGBT characters in the soap were introduced before he took over last year.
