National Geographic Channel to mark 9/11 a decade on

National Geographic Channel will air a week of programmes to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on America.

The programming will air from the 5th to the 9th of September, will include eight hours of brand new productions for the network.

“Ten years ago, 19 terrorists defeated the defences of the world’s greatest superpower.” The channel states, adding, “In just a few hours, they hijacked four passenger aircraft and killed almost 3,000 people. A decade later, the aftershock of that terrible day is still felt across the world.”

National Geographic Channel will investigate not only what happened and why, but also subsequent events, including the hunt for the 9/11 mastermind, Osama Bin Laden.

Simon Bohrsmann, General Manager, National Geographic Channel says: “9/11 is a terrible milestone in world history. Ten years on we have the benefit of time to take a closer look at these unforgettable stories.”

Some of the programmes to transmit in the 9/11 Week include, Seconds From disaster. A 9/11 special of the series that focuses on the critical minutes as air traffic controllers and the US air force reacted to the hijackings and then the suicidal attacks into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. While, Washington Under Attack tells the stories of the people of Washington DC, the other 9/11 city where a passenger jet was crashed into the Pentagon.

Ten Years Later was filmed partly inside the Twin Towers by two French film makers in the chaos after the attacks. The brothers were filming the lives of New York firefighters and found themselves at the heart of the nightmarish drama they were all caught up in. The film has been updated ten years on to tell what happened to some of the surviving firemen featured in the original film.

The World’s Fallen looks at the lives of those who were making a new life in America when they found themselves in the Twin Towers on the fateful day; and Inside 9/11 – What Happened Next is the the story of what occurred after the attacks, also America’s fight against terrorism, the invasion of Afghanistan and the secret operations to take out major Al Qaeda players.
