Steven Moffat teases Doctor Who Christmas Special

Steven Moffat{jcomments on}Steven Moffat has given the first hint – and it really is just a hint – of what Doctor Who fans can expect from this year’s Christmas Special.

The writer and producer gave the tease in an interview with SFX magazine and while it hardly gives anything away at all its the first time this year’s Christmas Special has been talked about.

“It will be as Christmassy as Hell. I might be cleverly redeploying a known Christmas story again, sort of… but probably not the one you think! It will be massively Christmassy and moving and sentimental and sweet. It’ll be set partly on Earth, but not completely. And it might have a period setting…” – Steven Moffat in an interview with SFX.

The special is due to begin filming in September. It’s already been confirmed that Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have signed up for the new series so its likely both will star in the Special but as yet there’s been no word on whether Arthur Darvill will be returning for season seven or not. The Christmas Specials usually attract big name guest stars (Kylie Minogue, Katherine Jenkins, David Morrissey, Michael Gambon) so that’s a “tradition” we expect to continue.

As for the ‘Christmas’ story well there’s only a few we can think off; the naivety, It’s a Wonderful Life and a Christmas Carol – which was, of course, sort of done last year. Can you think of any other ‘traditional’ Christmas stories that perhaps Doctor Who could do a spin on?

You can read the full interview with Steven Moffat in issue 213 of SFX which is on sale on 24th August.
