Celebrity Big Brother ratings winner for Channel 5

The return of Celebrity Big Brother paid dividends for Channel 5, scoring their highest viewership for a programme in many years.
Channel 5, which struggles to get past 2 million on a good night attracted an average of 5.1 million viewers between 9.00pm and 10.30pm. This is the biggest audience for Channel 5 since 2005 and is the most successful programme for them aside from two England football matches and a film, which rated higher.

The new series kicked off last night with a newly decorated house, new presenter Brian Dowling and so called celebrities such as Kerry Katona, Sally Bercow and Tara Reid. It comprehensively won its slot, something which is rarely seen from the channel more famous for CSI and films for men.

Big Brother’s Bit On The Side, which followed the launch, attracted a healthy 1.8million viewers. The 1 hour spin-off show will air seven nights a week and will follow the main highlights show. All eyes will now be on the channel to see how many of those viewers they can retain.

Big Brother continues tonight on Channel 5 with a live special.
