Sherrie Hewson Benidorm bound
Sherrie Hewson is to join ITV sitcom Benidorm show insiders suggest.
The actress and presenter is best know these days as one of the regular gossips on Loose Women however in the 1970s and 80s Hewson was a regular in comedy programmes including ATV’s Carry On series and the BBC’s Russ Abbott sketch shows. She also formed a popular comic double act with Ken Morley as Reg and Maureen Holdsworth in Coronation Street during the 1990s.
Now, building on Sherrie’s comic past, hit sitcom Benidorm has hired the celeb to appear as a new forthright hotel manager named Joyce Temple-Savage in the next series of the comedy.
“I have watched and loved it from the very beginning,” she said of the sitcom in a statement, adding, “My character is so brilliantly written that I can’t wait to start filming.”‘
60-year-old Sherrie is no stranger to hotel settings, having played the bitchy Virgina Raven for three years in former ITV soap opera Crossroads. She recently revealed, on Twitter, that she based the character of Virginia on Paul O’Grady’s drag-act, Lily Savage.
In the new episodes of Benidorm the regular sun-seekers will return to the fictional resort of Solana to find that the complex is under new ownership and that Joyce is intent on making some big changes.
The fifth series of Benidorm beings recording next month and will air on ITV next year, riding on the back of success this year when the series won the National Television Award for Most Popular Comedy Programme.
Another former Crossroads actor Tony Adams revealed in an interview with Vic Minett on BBC Radio Coventry and Warwickshire last week that he had also been offered a role in Benidorm, however had to turn it down due to the sitcom clashing with another job. Adams, who played smoothy Adam Chance in the motel saga for a decade, still hopes that he may at some point turn up in Solana in the future.
Sherrie will return to the revamped Loose Women when it returns to ITV daytime next month.
