Downton Abbey return date confirmed
Downton Abbey’s second season will kick off later this month.
The hugely popular period drama, created by Julian Fellowes, will return for its second season on Sunday 18th September – at 9pm. Downton Abbey proved to be the breakout hit of 2010 for ITV with ratings topping 10 million viewers and critics heaping praise on the drama. It’s lavish cast of Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Penelope Wilton and Elizabeth McGovern won over viewers.
The second season will see the drama move into World War One – also known as The Great War. The finale of the first season heralded the arrival of war with Robert Crawley (Bonneville) revealing England had declared war on Germany. The second season will start in 1916, two years into the war, and cover important historical events of the war such as the Battle of the Somme. It will comprise of eight episodes with Maria Doyle-Kennedy, Amy Nuttall and Iain Glen joining the cast.
A Christmas Special has also been ordered which will guest star Sharon Small and Nigel Havers. The possibility of further seasons of Downton Abbey has already been discussed.
