EastEnders wins big at TV Choice Awards
BBC One soap EastEnders won three awards at the TV Choice Awards.
At the 15th annual TV Choice Awards the London based soap went home with three awards. It was named Best Soap beating off rivals Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street. There will doubtless be grumbles from some soap fans who feel their favourite saga should have won especially given the 50th anniversary of Coronation Street last year. Earlier this year EastEnders won Best Serial Drama at the National Television Awards prompting outcry from some disgruntled Coronation Street fans.
Old EastEnders favourites Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie also won awards at the ceremony. Jessie Wallace was named Best Soap Actress in a tough category beating Pauline Quirke for Emmerdale and Corrie actresses Katherine Kelly and Michelle Keegan. Shane Richie won Best Soap Actor beating Danny Miller for Emmersdale anĀ Emmett Scanlan for Hollyoaks.
Corrie fans can take some comfort though in the soaps win for Best Storyline for the 50th anniversary plot, the tram-crash which killed off several characters. The tram-crash won over the likes of Ronnie’s babyswap in EastEnders, Lisa’s rape in Emmerdale and Brendan and Ste’s affair/domestic abuse storyline in Hollyoaks. Actress Paula Lane, who plays Kylie Platt – the new wife of David – was named Best Soap Newcomer. Lane won over rivals Emmett Scanlan as Brendan in Hollyoaks and Steve John Shepherd as Michael Moon in EastEnders.
