Anthony Cotton signs new Corrie contract

Anthony CottonAnthony Cotton has signed a new contract with ITV soap Coronation Street.

The new deal between the actor and the soap means he’ll continue playing Sean Tully until at least 2013. Media reports claim the actor signed the new contract to remain with the ITV soap because bosses feared he would leave after receiving ‘work offers’ elsewhere.

“I have signed a new deal and I’m really pleased. I love working on Coronation Street, it’s the best job in the world.” – Anthony Cotton

“He is one of the best-loved characters on the Street and it would be a duller place without him.” – A Corrie “source” quoted in The Mirror

Cotton joined Coronation Street as Sean Tully in 2003 but the character continues to provoke a mixed reaction from audiences. The character has been criticised many times over the years for being a “walking stereotype” – by viewers and critics alike. During his stint on the soap the actor has also appeared in the second series of Soapstar Superstar which was caught up in the phone-in scandal. He also had his own short-lived chat-show That Anthony Cotton Show which bombed in the ratings (it was beaten by Newsround) and lampooned by the critics.
