Inside Soap Awards 2011: The Winners
EastEnders has once again been crowned Best Soap at the Inside Soap Awards but Coronation Street’s 50th anniversary storyline was also recognised.
The 2011 Inside Soap Awards has seen EastEnders crowned Best Soap once again beating rivals Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and Coronation Street. It was a good night for the BBC One soap as it picked up several awards. As well as being named Best Soap the soap also won several other categories. Jessie Wallace beat Katherine Kelly, Pauline Quirke and Claire Cooper for Best Actress. Maisie Smith, who plays Tiffany Butcher, was named Best Young Actor. Tameka Empson, who plays Kim Fox, won the Funniest Performance category beating strong contenders Patti Claire, who plays Mary in Coronation Street, and Bronagh Waugh who plays Cheryl in Hollyoaks. Also nominated in the category was Empson’s EastEnders co-star Gillian Wright who plays Jean Slater.
Emmerdale picked up two awards at the ceremony; both involving the same storyline and characters. Danny Miller, who plays Aaron Livesy, was named Best Actor and also won Best Dramatic Performance for his part in the soap’s assisted suicide storyline. Channel Four soap Hollyoaks also picked up two awards; Emmett J Scanlan was named Best Newcomer for his role of Brendan Brady while Danny Mac was named Sexiest Male for his role of Dodger Savage.
Coronation Street won three awards; it’s 50th anniversary storyline which saw a tram crash into the Weatherfield street was recognised with the Outstanding Achievement Award. The touching departure of Bill Tarmey as Jack Duckworth, which saw Liz Dawn briefly reprise her role of Vera, won the Best Exit award. And the soap also picked the Sexiest Female gong for actress Michelle Keegan who plays barmaid Tina McIntyre.
In the world of daytime soaps Australian series Home & Away won Best Soap while Neighbours won Beswt Daytime Star for long-standing cast member Ryan Moloney who has played Toadie Rebecchi since the late 1990s. And finally BBC One’s school based drama Waterloo Road won Best Drama.
