Kylie Minogue accepts honorary degree

Singer and actress Kylie Minogue OBE has been awarded with an honorary degree by Anglia Ruskin University.

Former Neighbours actress-turned-singer Kylie received the honorary Doctor of Health Sciences award at Anglia Ruskin’s Chelmsford campus earlier this evening for her work promoting breast cancer awareness.

Scientists at Anglia Ruskin, based within the Helen Rollason Research Laboratory, are currently researching blood markers that could eventually help with the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

The Australian star, who received her award alongside 224 students, said: “I was incredibly honoured by today’s ceremony and it was an inspiration to be amongst the graduates at Anglia Ruskin University.

“Hopefully my award will help to inspire both the researchers into breast cancer and those affected by it.”

In total, 11 honorary awards are being presented at the Chelmsford campus to various individuals in recognition of their outstanding achievements. Amongst the distinguished names receiving honorary degrees this week are novelist Jilly Cooper, fashion designer Anya Hindmarch and swimmer Mark Foster.

Lord Ashcroft KCMG, Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin, said: “We make honorary awards to individuals of extraordinary talent who have made an outstanding contribution to their chosen field of endeavour. We hope that the recipients of these honorary awards will serve as examples to our graduates.”

Other honorary degrees are being awarded to TV sports presenter Manish Bhasin, economist Kate Barker, Paralympian Mike Brace, Beijing Union University President Professor Liu Gonghui, wine producer and author Stephen Skelton, leading lawyer Junius Ho and education author Mary Jane Drummond.

Over 2,500 students from Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford have been joined across this week by honoraries from the fields of music, sport, media, fashion, healthcare, education, literature, finance, law and viniculture as they celebrate their graduation.

The ceremonies, which are held at the Riverside campus in Chelmsford, see undergraduate and postgraduate students don ceremonial graduation gowns to mark the formal completion of their degrees.

A Doctor of Arts award will be presented to Anya Hindmarch for her role as a leading fashion designer tomorrow in the final of the ceremonies.
