The Vampire Diaries outperforms Charlie’s Angels

Ian SomerhalderThe CW’s supernatural drama The Vampire Diaries once again outperformed cancelled ABC drama Charlie’s Angels in terms of viewers aged between 18-49.

ABC’s revival of the classic Aaron Spelling 1970s series was given the axe last week after just a handful of poorly rated episodes. The network had high hopes for Charlie’s Angels but audiences just didn’t warm to the 21st century ‘angels’. For its first episode post cancellation at 8pm the drama had 5.6 million viewers (down on last week’s 6 million) with a 1.2 18-49 rating. Only slightly ahead of that was The Vampire Diaries with a 1.3 rating but with a much lower 2.8 million total viewers – but its the 18-49 viewers that advertisers really care about. Elsewhere at 8pm CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory had 14.6 million viewers with a 4.9 18-49 rating followed by Rules of Engagement at 8.30 with 11.4 million viewers and 3.7 in the 18-49 bracket.

At 9pm The Secret Circle (companion, but not spin-off, to The Vampire Diaries) saw its ratings rise slightly with 2.1 million viewers overall and 0.9 viewers aged 18-49. ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy had 9.3 million viewers with a 3.5 rating. CBS’s Person of Interest had 12.2 million viewers and a 18-49 rating of 2.7. At 10pm on CBS The Mentalist had 12.5 million viewers with a 2.5 18-49 rating while over on ABC Private Practice had 6.5 million viewers and a 2.4 18-49 rating – down considerably on previous seasons.
