Just under half of Hawaiian voters support gay marriage

A recent poll suggests just under half of voters in Hawaii support gay marriage while Civil Unions were supported by three quarters of voters.

A recent poll by Public Policy Polling in the American state of Hawaii places support amongst voters for gay marriage at 49% crucially though opposition to marriage equality only stands at 40% – meaning more people in Hawaii support than oppose gay marriage. The remaining 11% were polled as being unsure on the issue. According to additional reports support for the introduction of Civil Unions has a much higher support rate – at 77%. Hawaiian governor Neil Abercrombie signed a civil unions bill in February which will come into affect on January 1st 2012 and will gay couples almost all the rights of gay marriage.

Gay marriage divides opinion in America with much opposition coming from religious quarters. In New York gay marriage was recently legalised but other states that indicated they’ll go down the route of Civil Unions while some intend to impose an outright ban on gay marriage.

At present only a small number of countries have legalised gay marriage with Belgium, Canada, Norway, Iceland and Argentina amongst them. Countries which are currently debating introducing gay marriage include the Denmark, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Finland, Colombia and Luxembourg.
