Ricky Martin granted Spanish citizenship

The singer, originally from Puerto Rico, has been granted Spanish citizenship and according to reports its so he can take advantage of the country’s gay marriage laws. Spain became the third country in the world when it legalised gay marriage in 2005 and remains only a handful of countries around the world to have done so – though a number of countries are now debating/discussing marriage equality.
According to news reports Ricky Martin has been granted Spanish citizenship because of his “personal and professional links with Spain”. It’s been reported by Spanish newspaper El Pais that Martin plans to marry his boyfriend Carlos Gonzalez Abella. Martin came out in 2009 as gay after years of dodging questions about his sexuality. After coming out the singer said he wouldn’t get married until it was legalised in Puerto Rico.
