Kim Medcalf surprised by ‘Sam Mitchell’ recognition
Kim Medcalf, who played Sam Mitchell in EastEnders between 2002-2005, has said that she is surprised people remember her from the soap.
“I left six years ago, so it always surprises me that people might still remember me from that. The public often want to talk about Sam.
“But I suppose that’s the power of EastEnders, isn’t it?” – Kim Medcalf via Inside Soap
The actress also reflected positively on the programme’s 20th anniversary plot, which saw Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) bumped off by his scorned wife Chrissie (Tracy-Ann Oberman).
Sam – as portrayed by Medcalf – was central to the story, witnessing Chrissie’s final showdown with Den before later blackmailing her over the Queen Vic.
“My favourite moments on the show were all to do with the scenes involving Tracy-Ann Oberman (Chrissie Watts) and Michelle Ryan (Zoe Slater) during the infamous Dirty Den murder plot.
“We worked extremely long hours when that storyline was happening, but we all giggled our way through it. The three of us were the witches of Walford – and we loved every second of it!” – Kim Medcalf
Medcalf is currently starring in West End musical Crazy For You.
Danniella Westbrook played Sam on and off between 1990-2000, before reprising the role in 2009 and 2010.
