Johnny Vegas criticises Zai Bennett over Ideal axe
Johnny Vegas has criticised Zai Bennett for axing his BBC Three comedy Ideal.
Since becoming controller of BBC Three Bennett has axed a long list of programmes such as Two Pints of Larger and a Packet of Crisps, Doctor Who Confidential, Lunch Monkeys and Ideal.
On Saturday evening Johnny Vegas picked up an RTS North West gong for his role in Ideal and used his acceptance speech to criticise Bennett’s decision. Vegas said ‘Thank you BBC, when the numbers have never been higher, you’ve cancelled us. I’m being fired by the man who commissioned Kerry Katona… so I’m proud to do anything else that you’re not involved in’.
Johnny Vegas isn’t the only person disgruntled at Bennett and his long list of axings. Doctor Who fans immediately started a campaign to save the behind-the-scenes series Doctor Who Confidential which has been on-air since 2005 and still performs well for BBC Three. The recent, long list of, axings at BBC Three have been put down to, in part, wider budget cuts at the corporation and the station’s decision to focus its attention on “prime-time” audiences.
Bennett became controller of BBC Three earlier this year replacing Danny Cohen who was promoted to controller of BBC One – following Jay Hunt’s departure to Channel Four. Prior to joining the corporation Bennett had been in charge of ITV‘s family of digital stations.
