William Shatner brands co-stars criticisms as "nonsense"
William Shatner has labelled criticisms of him, by his former Star Trek co-stars, as “absolutely nonsense”
Its no secret that some of Shatner’s co-stars on Star Trek (the original series and the feature films it spawned) have more than a few issues with the actor. Perhaps most vocal of those critics, over the past few years at least, has been George Takei who has been involved in a long-standing feud with Shatner. Takei isn’t alone though; Walter Koenig has also been critical of Shatner and the late James Doohan also had issues with the actor.
So how does Shatner feel about his co-stars dislike of him and their criticisms? Well during an appearance on Piers Morgan Tonight, on CNN, he was asked just that by the former British newspaper editor. Although the interview with Morgan covered all of his career – not just Trek – it inevitably touched upon his Star Trek years. So how does Shatner feel about the accusations of “line stealing” ect? ‘They didn’t have great scenes. They didn’t have good lines. There was nothing to nick’.
As for his co-stars, well some of, dislike for him Shatner said ‘They said, well, wait a minute, don’t you want to know how much we despise you? What are you talking about? I thought I was loved.’ When asked by Morgan if he cared about being disliked the actor replied ‘I care that somebody in this world dislikes me. And I care that the enmity has carried over to the point of where we’re talking about it. It’s absolute nonsense. I mean, we’re going to die. Go out the way you came in, with a little innocence. You know? It’s ridiculous.‘
It isn’t just original series actors who have taken swipes at Shatner – recently Star Trek: Voyager actor Garrett Wang criticised the veteran actor’s attitude towards him. So how with Shatner’s former co-stars react to his words about the animosity that still exists between him and them? Doubtless we’ll find out soon enough.
