BBC defend Frozen Planet after newspaper allegations

The BBC has defended using footage of polar bear cubs from an animal park rather than the Arctic.

The landmark polar documentary presented by Sir David Attenborough has come under fire after it emerged that some footage had been filmed in an animal park. It was revealed in the newspapers after behind-the-sceens footage on the BBC website revealed what really happened.

The BBC released a statement defending the programme: “The commentary accompanying the sequence is carefully worded so it doesn’t mislead the audience and the way the footage was captured is clearly explained on the programme website.”

Attenborough, speaking on ITV 1’s This Morning yesterday defended the filming saying: “If you had tried to put a camera in the wild in a polar bear den, she would either have killed the cub or she would have killed the cameraman.”

The BBC have said they will consider whether to look into it more or whether to refer it to the BBC Trust to investigate.
