Moffat discussed the proposed movie on Richard Bacon’s Radio 5 Live Show. Last month it was reported that the BBC were developing a movie version of Doctor Who with Harry Potter director David Yates tapped to helm the project. It was widely reported the movie would be a Hollywood remake with a new actor in the lead role but Moffat was quick to deny those reports.

In the interview with Richard Bacon the series’ show-runner once again insisted that any movie would be part of Doctor Who cannon and not a remake or reboot. Of Yates comments about it being a remake the writer said ‘David was talking a little out of turn, there; a very, very brilliant director but no the film as described by him, of course we’re not going to do that – a film that contradicts the television series, it would be a heathen thing to do … I would be ‘beheaded’ to do such a thing!’

The writer added ‘It would be wonderful to do a Doctor Who film, but when and if we did – and hopefully we will be doing it – it will be very much an offshoot of the television series and we’ll be part of it, and it will star the television Doctor, of course – anything else would be heresy!

A movie version of Doctor Who has long been proposed – right back to the cancellation of the original series in 1989. Plans to make a movie of Doctor Who in the 1990s ultimately stalled and eventually the 1996 television movie starring Paul McGann was made instead. Following the television movie reports once again routinely surfaced claiming the BBC were planning a movie and even with the television revival of Doctor Who in 2005 the rumours continued. While it now seems the BBC are very interested in making a movie any such project would take at least a few years of development so fans shouldn’t expect it at cinemas any time soon!
