Benedict Cumberbatch joins Star Trek 2

Benedict Cumberbatch is the latest actor to sign up for J.J Abram’s hotly anticipated Star Trek sequel.

The British actor is currently appearing in BBC One‘s critically acclaimed Sherlock; a modern-day updating by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss of the iconic sleuth. Deadline reports that the actor has landed a role in the forthcoming new Star Trek movie though as yet there are no details on whether he’ll play a villain or hero in the film. Yesterday it was announced that actor Noel Clarke had also been cast in the sequel but again there were few details on his role. To sci-fi fans Clarke is best known for his role of Mickey Smith, the one-off boyfriend of Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), in Doctor Who.

Benedict Cumberbatch already has several film roles under his belt such as War Horse and Tinker Tailor Solider Spy. The actor is also part of the cast for the two Hobbit films in which his Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman plays the younger Bilbo Baggins.
