Denis Lawson to join New Tricks

New TricksThe BBC has announced that former Holby City actor Denis Lawson is to join the cast of popular BBC One detective drama New Tricks. Lawson’s addition the cast follows the decision by James Bolam to quit after eight seasons.

Denis Lawson joins the ninth series of BBC One’s New Tricks as the new recruit to Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman’s (Amanda Redman) team of retired ex-coppers reinvestigating the Met’s unsolved crimes.

“I’m delighted to be joining Amanda, Alun and Dennis on New Tricks. I’ve long admired the show and love its ability to be warm, humorous and gritty simultaneously. I’m really looking forward to being part of it.” – Denis Lawson

The antithesis of Brian Lane’s eternal pessimism, retired Detective Inspector Steve McAllister (Denis Lawson) is a bundle of energetic optimism with a tendency to get personally involved in the cases he’s working on.  Breaking rules and ignoring procedure are all in a day’s work for Pullman’s team, but even by Gerry Standing’s (Dennis Waterman) and Brian Lane’s (Alun Armstrong) standards, Steve’s unorthodox, and sometimes unprofessional, approach to policing raises a few eyebrows.

Denis Lawson career has spanned television, film and theatre, including Local Hero, Holby City, Sensitive Skin, Bleak House, Marchlands and Criminal Justice
says:

“Casting a new member of the UCOS team was always going to be an exciting challenge and we are absolutely thrilled that the brilliant Denis Lawson is joining us. Denis brings warmth, wit and charm to the character Steve McAllister and is a very welcome addition to the New Tricks family.” – Richard Burrell, Executive Producer

With ratings peaking at an impressive 9.7 million, 36% share, the last series of New Tricks comprehensively dominated its slot. The ninth 10-part series of New Tricks is currently filming at Pinewood Studios and on location in London for transmission on BBC One later this year.  New Tricks is made by Wall to Wall Television (part of Shed Media Group), executive produced by Richard Burrell for Wall to Wall and Polly Hill for BBC One. New Tricks was recommissioned by Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC One and Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning.
