Newt Gingrich, US Republican Presidential candidate lashed out during a live televised debate regarding an ex-wife’s allegations that he wanted an ‘open marriage’. The debate, just two days before the South Carolina primary, got heated when moderator CNN’s John King opened up the debate by asking Gingrich about the allegations, which were first published by ABC News.

When asked if he would like to respond to the story Gingrich said “No, but i will”, prompting the audience to cheer. He went on to say that much of the news media was “destructive, vicious and negative”. He said that he was appalled that CNN “take trash like that” to begin a Presidential debate.

John King tried to deflect the story saying it was first reported by ABC, but Gingrich hit back stating that it was repeated by CNN and that he (King) chose to open with the story. Gingrich has said the story is false and claims that ABC was not interested in his offer to show them that the story is allegedly false. Gingrich ended saying he was “tired of the elite media protecting Barack Obama by attacking the republicans”.

American broadcast networks are often criticised for being left leaning in much the same way Fox News Channel is seen to be pro-republican.
