Iran’s Press TV has UK broadcast licence revoked

Iran’s state international news channel has had its licence revoked in the UK after breaching Ofcom rules.

Iran’s state international news channel has had its licence revoked in the UK after breaching Ofcom rules. On Friday, Press TV was removed from the Sky platform after broadcasting regulator Ofcom revoked its broadcast licence after editorial and content issues. It was told that they either had to have editorial control for the channel in the UK or transfer the broadcasting licence to Iran. Press TV had also received a fine for broadcasting an interview with an imprisoned journalist which had been conducted under duress. It was announced that Press TV failed to pay the £100,000 fine.

The state-run news channel which can still be viewed online is seen as a mouth piece for the Iranian government to spread their messages through the English speaking world. Press TV has been criticised in the past for their coverage of events. Former MP George Galloway was a prominent figure on the channel, hosting his own discussion show from London.
