Late night talk show host Jay Leno has angered the Sikh community after an on-air joke. During an episode broadcast last week Leno was talking about the US Republican Presidential candidates’ holiday homes when he showed a picture of Mitt Romney’s ‘home’. The picture was the Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, one of the holiest places of worship for Sikh’s.
There has been no word from broadcaster NBC who air The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, but the US State Department has said that Leno’s comments appeared to be “satirical in nature”. According to the Press Association, India’s foreign minister had raised concerns with US authorities. The golden temple is based in India.
It’s not the first time India has made official complaints about foreign programmes mocking or depicting their culture and beliefs in a bad way. At the end of last month the BBC received complaints after Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson made several remarks during a Christmas special of the motoring show.
