Shirley McLaine to join Downton Abbey
American actress Shirley McLaine will join the cast of Downton Abbey for its third series, reports suggest.
The Daily Beast reports the actress will join the cast for the third season of the ITV drama which will be set in the 1920s. McLaine will join as the mother of the American Cora, Countess of Grantham (Elisabeth McGovern). Reports had previously suggest that some of Cora’s American family would be introduced during the third season of Downton Abbey. McLaine is known for her wide range of film and television roles which include Gambit, Bewitched and Shirley’s World.
The third series of Downton Abbey will be set in the early part of the 1920s following the second season which cover the First World War. ITV have also ordered a second Christmas Special to follow the third season following the strong performance of the festive special just a few weeks ago.
