Doctor Who wins 5 Virgin Media Television Awards

Doctor WhoDoctor Who has won 5 categories at the Virgin Media Television awards including TV Show of the Year.

The awards, voted for by the public, has seen Doctor Who win 5 different categories. It was crowned TV Show of the Year with 43.3% of the vote beating popular reality television shows such as The Only Way is Essex and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Fellow Saturday evening drama Merlin came second in the category with 31.9% of the vote. However, the situation was reversed for the Best Sci Fi category with Merlin winning with 35% of the vote and Doctor Who coming second with 33.1%. Vampire drama True Blood was voted third with 8%.

Rory Pond (Arthur Darvill) was named TV Character of the Year seeing off competition from Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) from Torchwood, the TARDIS (presumably Suranne Jones in The Doctor’s Wife) and True Blood vampire Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard). The Doctor being shot in Utah in the season opener The Impossible Astronaut – also seen in the season finale The Wedding of River Song – was voted the Most Explosive Moment of the Year with 41% of the vote.

also clinched the second put in the category for when the TARDIS spoke, again presumably referring to Suranne Jones’s role in The Doctor’s Wife. In third place was Smallville with the moment Clarke Kent put on his Superman cape and not that far behind was EastEnders baby-swap moment which prompted thousands of complaints.

Actress Karen Gillan picked up two awards; Best Actress where she beat Merlin’s Katie McGrath and Misfit’s Lauren Socha as well as Ringer’s Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gillan was also named Hottest Female beating, again, Katie McGrath from Merlin and Olivia Wilde form House as well as Deborah Ann Woll from True Blood.

The Best Actor category was won, with 50% of the vote, by Colin Morgan for his role in Merlin, with Matt Smith coming a respectable second. Hottest male was won by Morgan’s co-star Bradley James who plays King Arthur in the BBC fantasy drama but it was a tough category with other hotties polling well including Ian Somerhalder, Alexander Skarsgard and Ed Westwick.
