Welsh actress Eve Myles has discussed the future of sci-fi series Torchwood ruling out a return for the Doctor Who spin-off this year but suggested a movie is a possibility.
The fourth season of the sci-fi series aired on BBC One, in the UK, and Starz, in America, last year and was titled Torchwood: Miracle Day. Myles and John Barrowman reprised their roles while Mekhi Phifer, Alexa Havins and Bill Pullman joined the cast for the ten-part series. Miracle Day received mixed reviews and lacklustre ratings putting a fifth season of Torchwood in doubt.
In a new interview with Cult Box actress Eve Myles has discussed what the future may hold for the series; ruling out a return this year but hinting at a possible movie next year. Myles told Cult Box ‘As far as I know at the moment, everything’s still very much on hold. Russell has things happening in his personal life….John isvery much on the same page as me, in that if and when they need us, they can just pick the phone up and we will be there before they’ve even put the phone down, because it’s something we love doing….Nothing’s going to happen in 2012, I know that much for sure. But who knows what will happen in 2013. Maybe a movie, to kinda draw a line under it. That’s the thing about Torchwood, every series we’ve changed our format. We’ve always had a gap in between, so fingers crossed, because we’ve got such an outstanding loyal fan base. They deserve Torchwood to go ahead with something else to draw a line under it, for the fans to have a bit of closure.’
Creator and writer Russell T Davies recently revealed he had given up the majority of his writing work to care for his partner. He will be helming a new CBBC drama this year titled Aliens Vs Wizards but it seems likely that is his only project for the time being. So the future of Torchwood is still very much up in the year. Fans should remember though that there was a two-year gap between Children of Earth (2009) and Miracle Day (2011) so its quite possible that Torchwood will return but several years down the line.
