There are hints that CW teen drama Gossip Girl could return for a sixth and final season.
The teeny drama starring Blake Lively and Leighton Meester is currently airing its fifth season and will air its landmark 100th episode shortly. The future of Gossip Girl has been the subject of much debate with many arguing it may well be axed because of its low ratings. It is one of several CW shows to be suffering from, to put it politely, lacklustre ratings and is widely seen as a more likely candidate for the axe.
However, executive producer Stephanie Savage and Josh Safran have hinted the end may not be in sight for Gossip Girl – just yet. They have hinted that a sixth and final season is quite likely. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter at a screening for the 100th episode, Savage said ‘We’re not writing a series finale this year’ – meaning they were not treating the fifth season finale as the big end. Savage later added ‘I checked in with the bosses to make sure we’re not shooting ourselves in the foot’
Savage also told the Hollywood Reporter that the cast contracts run out at the end of the next season so ‘that feels like probably an organic ending point’. Peter Roth, Warner Brothers TV President, made a similar remake when he said ‘I certainly hope we get one more season.’
So the hints are that Gossip Girl will return for a final season ….
