NBC celebrates ‘TODAY’ at 60

Former anchors of the world’s longest running morning programme returned Friday to mark the 60th birthday of the Today show.

Former anchors of the world’s longest running morning programme returned Friday to mark the 60th birthday of the Today show. Throughout the week NBC’s Today programme has been looking back at 60 years, rounding off the celebrations by bringing back all former living anchors as they reminisced about their time as host.

The newest of co-anchors, Ann Curry (pictured below) wore a dress featuring the iconic Today logo. The colours which form the logo were beamed onto some famous  landmarks including the Empire State Building and Niagara Falls.

On Friday, former anchors including Barbara Walters, Bryant Gumbel, Tom Brokaw, Deborah Norville, Katie Couric and Hugh Downs to name but a few returned to the studio. The most recent anchor who left last year, Meredith Vieira, also returned. Although today, 14th January marks the 60th birthday, the celebrations took place yesterday as the Weekend versions of Today are considered separately.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a special recorded message to the Today show saying that the show had become part of American culture. Actor Tom Hanks, who has appeared numerous times on the show, delivered a special cake on-set as past and present anchors gave a toast.
